Food & Culinary Cuisines Of Bhutan

Bhutanese food is celebrated all around the world for its simplicity and unique flavors. Some of the unique food items that form a part and parcel of Bhutanese cuisine are:

Ema Datshi

Ema Datshi is the national dish of Bhutan. It is mostly prepared with dried red chilies and traditional cheese. Depending upon the surroundings, this dish has multiple variants by twisting the richness and spiciness level. But it should be tried by every visitor to the country at least once to get an understanding of the country’s taste palette. The other famous variations of the region are Kewa Datshi (prepared with potatoes) and Shamu Datshi (prepared with mushrooms).

Momos

Momos are famous all over the world for their simplistic preparation method and high nutritional value. Even though momos originated from the Tibetan region of China, it has spread its essence to different parts of the world and Bhutan is no exception. Just like any other region, Bhutan also offers different varieties of momos in both steamed and fried versions. Apart from momos, the region is also famous for its thukpas.

Phaksha Paa

Phaksha Paa is a stir-fried pork dish with vegetables. It is later combined with a stew or gravy and is best enjoyed with rice.

Jasha Maru

Jasha Maru is a chicken stew but with a high level of spiciness. It is often paired with rice for a better experience.

Puta

Puta is the Bhutanese counterpart of Japanese soba noodles. Considering the time consumption in preparing this dish, it is only made on special occasions.
